The King Goes for The (WWE) Crown

The weather, once again, snagged defeat from the jaws of victory, as our all but promised "winter wallop" failed to materalize in the 4 state region-AGAIN, forcing me to come to work  when I was hoping to not...thus, in the midst of another boring afternoon at that known hub of excitement, the automotive dealership, I come to you with randomness & unclear thought.

Very happy to see Jerry "The King" Lawler, one of my all time favorites, "earn" a championship match at the upcoming WWE pay per view, Elimination Chamber, which is the companys last before WrestleMania.

I wrote a little bit on Lawler a few weeks ago as a "wild card" Royal Rumble winner, a different challenger that might make for an exciting program. The rumor that WWE creative read my blog, found a good idea, & ran with it, albeit 6 weeks sooner than I suggested, are as of yet unfounded.

For those of you only familiar with Lawler's work as a RAW announcer & his periodic wrestling appearances, you may ask the question: whats the big deal? I am here to tell you that its very unlikely anyone will walk away from his championship opportunity in 3 weeks disappointed.

I have studied "The King" for years-and as a wrestler, promo, & personality, he is extremely hard to top. Lawler has tremendous versatility, largely developed from his years as THE headline star on The Memphis circuit, which featured weekly towns which required creativity & a match different from the week prior.

I had the honor of working as a referee for a Lawler vs DLo Brown match several years back, and I was amazed at the ease in which he not only controlled the match, but controlled the crowd. It didn't seem like he was even working- it was so effortless. And I  freely admit, which won't be a big revelation to most of you, I took alot of what I do in the ring from Jerry Lawler-ever notice the single strap singlet?- albeit not as well . Few have.

Lawler had great, even legendary, matches with some of wrestlings biggest stars of the past 40 years, including but not limited to Nick Bockwinkel, Hulk Hogan, Terry Funk, Curt Hennig, Jimmy Valiant, Harley Race, Ric Flair, Bill Dundee, & Andre The Giant.

Lawler also managed to have memorable feuds & matches with many lesser lights (due to the promotions sometimes tight purse strings) such as The Colossus Of Death, Lord Humongous, Dr Frank(enstein), Centurian Marsalla, The Soultaker, & "Darth Vader", to name a few.

The Miz, a tremendously charasmatic young heel himself, in some ways resembles a much younger Lawler, with his swagger, mannerisms, & penchant for bending the rules. Add the fact that the program of the "new sensation vs the old guard" usually makes for entertaining television & usually good matches, and I think we have a winning combination.

I did in fact pass on the Rumble, even with the late temptation to purchase. This time, much like I didn't miss Dusty Rhodes vs. Randy Orton in the Bullrope Match from the Bash 2007 ( That match turned out not so good, although the build up was strong) I think its very unlikely that Lawler vs Miz will miss the mark...and this "mark" probably won't miss it.

Until next time...
